Doing our bit for Dubai Cares

Dubai Cares strives to improve children's access to quality primary education in developing countries. For their Ramadan 2014 campaign they needed a TVC with a compelling story and approached Muddville Director Jac Mulder with the challenge.    When it comes to passion projects like this one Jac always goes above and beyond the call of duty.     Listening closely he understood the brief, but with Ramadan fast approaching the timeline for the deliverables were rather tight.  So Jac jumped on a plane, hired a driver, booked hotels and wandered into schools throughout Sri Lanka. Covering  an estimated 3000 kilometres, Jac and his crew knocked on doors, met with headmasters, teachers and even a monk at one of the schools.     Back in Dubai Jac surprised the client with some exquisite footage. The problem was, as happens more often than not thanks to Jac’s quests to always capture the perfect shots, the seven days of filming resulted in too much content. Scenes that told a thousand stories, ones that would truly tug at any humanitarian’s heart strings, and a myriad directions in which to push the film.  But only 35 seconds to do it in...   Here is the result of that journey. Support if you can, it will make a world of difference to a child in need.

Project: A Bogus Breitling – A completely CG experiment

George Manolopoulous is Muddville’s VFX Supervisor and heads up our Post Production division. Every once in a while he likes to shake things up a bit…   So he set his team a challenge to see how far they can push the the limits of photorealism by creating a watch using only post production software.   Rising to the occasion like the army out of 300 (just without the tragic side effects) our post production team created the watch using:   Modo for modeling Maya for animation Vray for rendering NukeX for particles and compositing Hiero for asset management   The obligatory disclaimer: This CG clip is an internal project, not requested or financed by Breitling or any of their representatives.   The obligatory hat-tip: we want to thank Breitling for serving as the inspiration for this project. We love your watches! (And call us if you need any ads.)

Our first 4D commercial

An agency with a brave idea left the team at Muddville enthralled with the prospect of creating the first 4D commercial for VOX Cinemas. One couldn't help but notice the excitement in the air. In Jac’s words, “I have to confess the energy, support and urgency to create this cinema commercial was one of the most exhilarating experiences I've had the privilege of being a part of.”  Cameras were rigged to cars, inside and out, and as the clips were captured one thing was obvious; everyone was having a ridiculous amount of fun. We brought toys and picked fascinating locations driven by the prospect of making the backdrop of the UAE a little different to what we normally see.  We took the time to compose and design crazy car rigs that would allow us to travel in and out of the car seamlessly, these allowed us to think in the fourth dimension where tilting horizons and dramatic thumps were only complimented by the action of the stunt driver. The end result was a roller coaster ride of epic proportions. In one day we managed to cross four international borders, shoot on rocky wadi surfaces, blast through sand dunes, four wheel drift in quarries, cruise on roads and blast water seven meters high! Best viewed while seated in a 4D cinema, without a seatbelt, this is one for the adrenalin junkies. To get a taste of the effect just press play. If you dare…

got space?

We have recently expanded our Stornext compatible fibre channel Apple XSAN to a capacity of 60TB, which will soon jump to 80TB of total online full res storage capacity. We are running the latest XSAN 3 on OSX Mountain Lion with shared access to all our Windows workstations ensuring all the advantages of a completely data-centric workflow.  Our Thunderbolt equipped Macs are also now able to take advantage of direct access to the SAN through the external ATTO Thunderlink providing Thunderbolt to Fibre Channel connectivity. To back up all that data reliably we employ Engineering Emmy award, and Hollywood Post Alliance Engineering Excellence award winning technology in the form of IBM’s LTFS (Linear Tape File System) on high capacity LTO-5 tapes.

davinci resolve suite

Categories: technology

We have put one of the last major pieces into our post puzzle by building a dedicated DaVinci Resolve color grading and finishing suite.  The room has been blacked out and fitted out with a full set of Tangent Devices Element grading panels and a massive 65” Panasonic Professional Series 3D Plasma monitor, calibrated with 3D LUTs through a Blackmagic Design HDLink Pro 3D. The monitor was sourced and imported from the U.S. as the model is not yet officially available in the UAE. In the past month we have completed the grade on a full length feature film and two commercials. We are also able to tap into the skills of international DaVinci colorists right here in Dubai through remote grading sessions.

muddville goes stereoscopic at atlantis

Categories: production, technology

The best thing about having as many Red Epics as we do, is the opportunity to use more than one at a time. At Muddville, more is never enough, and this certainly applies to our growing collection of accessories and multi-purpose camera rigs... some bought, some modified, most hatched from the brain of Jac, and custom built. Our latest multicam escapades involves one of our latest acquisitions… our new stereoscopic mirror rig recently brought in from the states. For four days at the beginning of May we descended upon Atlantis Hotel and Resort on the Palm with a full film crew, three trucks full of lighting and grips equipment, and our new 3D camera rig, complete with a matched pair of Optimo Rouge zoom lenses specially brought in from Italy. One of the biggest challenges of shooting stereoscopic in Dubai is the lack of local equipment and technical know how. Muddville intend to change that. Stereoscopic Post Shooting a stereoscopic production is only half the battle. We made sure our entire post pipeline was ready for the new workflow, at up 5K resolution all in RAW R3D no less. We also made to ensure we could monitor in full 1080p 3D from beginning to end. Muddville are now set up for editing, compositing, visual effects, and color grading in 3D.

hollaphonic music video

Categories: production, director

When we met up with the lads from Hollaphoinc we knew we were going to create something that had a real edge. When the duo launched their new single “ I don’t want it to end” it sky rocketed to number one on the i Tunes downloads Charts in the UAE region. The single has won them some great recognition and we wanted to create a video that matched the energy of the song... so what did we do ? Our think out of the box Director Jac came up with a concept never seen before, 3 Red Epics on one rig, need we say anymore. The new technique was nothing short of challenging with the guys having to carry it around in a night club packed with people. However after 2 nights of running, sweating and some interesting dancing by the crew themselves we produced a slick video. The Hollaphoinc crew had HTC onboard and used the video to coincide with the launch of the new HTC One and it was a great little Branded Entertainment exercise.. Thanks to all those who threw shapes on the dance floor and to Olly Wood and Greg Stainer from Hollaphonic
